Some cartoon historians believe that Elmer evolved from a character called “Egghead” in a Tex Avery cartoon short “Egghead Rides Again” released in July of 1937.Įgghead reappeared in 1937 and then in 1938 in “Daffy Duck & Egghead.”Įgghead continued in cartoons for a few years, then Elmer Fudd (looking much like Egghead) was the feature of a Chuck Jones short “Elmer’s Candid Camera” in 1940.Īt this stage of his development Elmer encountered Bugs Bunny in “A Wild Hare.” Their relationship went through stages of friendship and antagonism before the 1950s saw them in the “I hate that wascally wabbit” phase.Īt about this time in our cultural changing scene theaters ceased their standard format of previews, cartoon, newsreel and feature film so cartoons moved to television on Saturday mornings.ĭuring the transition Elmer adopted his trademark hat and double-barreled shotgun (which fired multiple times regardless of its two barrels).Īs you might expect, a number of actors voiced Elmer through the years.
